After the Event: Carrying The Hester Street Fair Conversation Forward

Earlier this month in New York City, I was fortunate enough to visit one of the up-and-coming markets in the city – The Hester Street Fair in the Lower East Side.

The handpicked list of vendors are ah-may-zing. Food is a done deal, the hand-made jewelry collections are creative and innovative, people are friendly and well its worth a visit for sure.

Plus, I completely geeked out when I saw Hester’s SuChin Pak! Mind you, I do not freak out or approach so called “celebrities” but, I was pretty stoked – I felt dorky.

You’re Invited: 2011 Retail Camp Los Angeles Conference

I am very EXCITED to attend Retail Camp this weekend – a Saturday and Sunday all-day event. Retail Camp is a conference with workshops and presentations focused on digital media.  Topics include  marketing, social media, launching collections directly to consumers, public relations, manufacturing, eCommerce, mobile marketing, augmented reality and QR Codes. The panel of speakers and topics covered are exciting, influential and I’m sure I’ll be absorbing more than I may be able to handle. The list of participants are growing on a daily basis - online shopping sites such as Nasty Gal Clothing, ModCloth, to Advanstar Communications, and Vogue to name a few.

The program looks really interesting – lots of discussions, demos, and workshops!

Will you be there? Get in touch.

Style Fashion Week Bringing Fashion Back to Los Angeles

Fashion Week on the West Coast has been, well a little quiet. Especially since 2008 when the five-year partnership between IMG and Smashbox Studios folded its Culver City tents. But it looks like Fashion week will make a fierce return to Los Angeles this Spring with a four-day flourish of runway shows at the newly renovated downtown Vibiana (The former Cathedral’s baroque-inspired 35,000 square feet of luxurious space will host Style Fashion Week March 15th-18th).

Style Fashion Week’s intelligent and innovative platform will showcase celebrity hosts, art installations, live music, and gift bags to compliment the runway shows.

Also, in support of the American Heart Association, The Go Red For Women Celebrity Fashion Show will be held for the first time in L.A. Thursday, March 17th. A $25 entrance fee will be charged and all proceeds from the star-filled show will be given to the American Heart Association.

These next two weeks are going to be busy.

CAL MARKET CENTER and WGSN TREND SEMINAR: RETAIL & GLOBAL CONSUMER ATTITUDE

January 17th, Monday was the first day of market. I stopped by to attend a trend seminar by WGSN. Five seasons a year, buyers meet and shop the CMC for LA FASHION MARKET. There are hundreds and hundreds  if not thousands of designers and collections displayed in showrooms.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sally Lohan, West Coast Content Editor and Trend Expert for WGSN, who presented the seminar. WGSN is the leading online trend-analysis and research service providing creative and business intelligence for the apparel, style, design and retail industries. I thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. She covered what’s happening globally in retail and shared insight and analysis on global consumer attitudes and trends moving forward for 2011. Some takeaways  trends:

Downtown to Directives West First.LA Fashion Show

On FRIDAY, October 15 I was invited to  “FIRST.LA” presented by Directives West at The California Market Center (CMC) lobby. Directives West is the West Coast merchandising consulting division of The Doneger Group. And if you must know, they provide clients with comprehensive market analysis in all categories of business.

FIRST.LA is returning for a second season after launching in March 2010 – exhibiting a handpicked collection of designers offering an exclusive first look at Spring/Summer 2011 collections. The contemporary-themed runway presentation showed designers Whitley Kros, Yana K, Boyfriend/Girlfriend, Ai for Ai, Moon Collection and more …

The collections had me at the edge of my seat! Lots of silk, lace and embellishments walking up and down the runway. Many of the looks were suitable for a social day out with friends and a night out with girls. I did fancy the variety of silhouettes:

    R.P.S. • Gwynneds • Whitley Kros• Boyfriend/Girlfriend

    Ai for Ai • Yana K • Champagne & Strawberry • Matty M

    Till your next show.

BARE MAGAZINE’S LAUNCH OF ITS SEVENTH ISSUE

The time has come and this Thursday will be my last BARE Launch party :( Last year was fun! I hope to see you there …

FYI: BARE Magazine is UC Berkeley’s premiere fashion and lifestyle publication, BARE is proud to announce the release of our seventh issue this coming May.

“This coming issue is all about fiction and its large part in fashion. BARE explores the growing phenomenon of  androgyny, pays homage to the influential and creative works of the late Alexander McQueen, and experiments with ubiquitous fairy tales and type-scenes. BARE’s photoshoots and interviews strive to collaborate with more local talent (San Franciscan Cari Borja is featured in “A Class of Their Own”) and take advantage of what the Bay Area has to offer. In short, BARE’s seventh issue investigates the relationship between fantasy and accessibility. We feel that this theme is especially resilient today in the fashion industry, and made sure viewers will be swept off their feet.”

May 6, 2010 (Thursday) from 9-11 PM at Hotel Durant (2600 Durant Ave, Berkeley, CA)

    TEDxBerkeley: Ideas Worth Spreading

Today (Saturday, April 3rd) I attended TEDxBerkeley at Wheeler Auditorium. Before I go any further, this event was amazing in terms of speakers, organization, music performers, inspiration, networking, and I could really go on … (if you have ever been to a TED event, you know what I’m talking about)

TED, an event that brings together students and people from all over who want to make the world a better place (it won’t happen all at once, obviously! That’s what TED’s all about… inspiring others! ), have one overarching theme - ”doing the unprecedented”.  If you weren’t at the TEDxBerkeley event it was available to watch live here!

NOW THEN, speakers at TEDxBerkeley were quite thought-provoking in each of their presentations:

Dacher Keltner – Psychologist and UC Berkeley Professor. “Compassion is contagious!”
Rick Smolan – TEDster, Author, Photographer.
Bradley Voytek – Neuroscientist and UC Berkeley Student.
David Ewing Duncan – Director of Center for Life Science Policy at UC Berkeley and TEDster.
UC Men’s Octet – The premier a cappella group at UC Berkeley.
Eric Cheng – Ocean Conservationist, Photographer. 71% of our world is ocean, and 90% from that 71% is unexplored ocean territory.
Eric Lewis – “Piano Iconoclast” and TEDster.
Ross Evans – Inventor, Founder of Xtracycle, and TEDster.
Fred Dust – Designer and Partner at IDEO. We are all designers! How can we reform our environments to make it better?!
Amit Deutsch – Student Activist and UC Berkeley Student.
Daniel Kraft – Scientist and TEDster. Technologies are allowing more much more personalized services, especially in the health care sector – digital medicine, nano medicine, regenerative genes … (scary)
Eric Rodriguez – Founder UC Berkeley Economic Philanthropy Course.
Asma Abbas – Author and Professor.
Drue Kataoka – Artist, Social Entrepreneur
Nanxi Liu – Pianist and Berkeley Student
    Robert Strong – Magician

    “About TED

TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design – three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Attendees have called it “the ultimate brain spa” and “a four-day journey into the future.” The diverse audience – CEOs, scientists, creatives, philanthropists – is almost as extraordinary as the speakers, who have included Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Paul Simon, Sir Richard Branson, Philippe Starck and Bono.”

PLAYgreen Festival: Getting Fashionable with Eco Friendly Clothing

Today was the PLAYgreen Festival held on the UC Berkeley campus. This event brought together thousands of students and community supporters for one unified purpose – learning and promoting to live a greener lifestyle! “YEY”  The Pauley Ballroom was filled with local shops, restaurants and global companies all sharing how individuals (yes, that means you too) can contribute to a greener way of living… it was pretty great :)

As BARE‘s TV correspondent, I was there filming the event with my stellar-camera girl-Gabby!

I can’t wait to finish editing, actually, I’ll be assisting Gabby because she IS the expert. Nonetheless, BARE hosted a fashion show introducing Audrey Acosta’s eco-friendly clothing collection. I had a chance to chit chat with Audrey – she is so sweet! Gabby and I were also to film a short interview with her as well – stay tuned for the report!

(Audrey is also a Berkeley alum – woot woot!)

Audrey is a firm believer is sustainable clothing, her company specializes in eco-chic fashion – all her garments are made using 100% recycled textiles!!
