Prospects of Social Media and Fashion

October 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

We are living in exciting times eh? Yes, we are!

Before I go discuss further some of you may still not fully understand ‘social media‘. I like to think it as media that is socially disseminated online. The web and Internet supports and continues to accelerate this type of communication and human interaction. It allows individuals to form communities. Again, due to the web there are no clear definitions for community.  You might be wondering – I know I have –  what constitutes a community. Schools? Towns? Companies? Forums? MySpace groups? Facebook fan pages? Tech sites? Fashion sites? Do they need to be off-line or on-line? I would say that all that I’ve listed rightfully can be deemed a community. More and more things are becoming if it already hasn’t, a blur. I tell you, technology. Crazy.

At the same time it’s wonderful. It’s paved the way and brought us 2009 Fashion Week shows right into our own homes.

Burberry Prorsum did it too!

At this point, fashion bloggers and enthusiasts around the world can all become fashion market editors. Next season, we can watch shows during dinner right in the comfort of our own home with friends! Don’t get me wrong, I would still attend shows over watching them with friends :) It used to be SO exclusive and you would starve to attend the shows, NOW, times are changing and things are definitely becoming more open. All industries are clearly modifying their business models and PR/marketing strategies. For the fashion industry, however, I’m excited to see how we will embrace these changing times.

Any thoughts?

New York Fashion Week Closes

September 19, 2009 · 1 Comment

Although New York Fashion Week has come to an end, I’m excited for the shows in London, Milan and Paris. Like I said, September is THE most exciting time of the year in fashion.

dressup2.1

Monday night was the IFB: Independent Fashion Blogger Soirée, and the turnout was GREAT. There was a panel discussion discussing the democratization of fashion by bloggers, followed by a discussion on social media. Times are changing people! It was truly inspiring to be surrounded by like-minded fashionable people, bloggers and fashion enthusiasts..!

Thanks Nubia :)

Social Alchemy Club’s {PRE} Fashion Show Recap!

September 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

IMG_0722

This event was well worth my journey; I got lost getting there, it literally took me 45 minutes to go 10 blocks, from my office to Mulberry Street! Also, if you’re wondering about the image on the left, I took the image from inside the showroom. A big boo boo was relying on my iphone for photographs, as shown in the quality of some of the images.

The venue was adorable, clean and definitely a great pick to host a fashion event. I couldn’t go to the after party at Delicatessen because this girl has work early early in the morning tomorrow. Nonetheless, I met some amazing designers who have amazing work…

Joobeelicious1

I met with Alison Hessert, designer of Mixology NYC. Her jewelry collection is made locally in NYC and I loved her feather statement necklaces. Her inspiration comes from her childhood days and the vintage collection completely caught my eye.

Joobeelicious4

The Magnes Sisters have a bag line (shown above) that also caught my eye! They were all so sweet, and silly, Yael and I posing with one of their clutch designs. And this is so like me to ruin the picture by covering the bag entirely with my hand! FYI: It’s the same bag Yael is holding, except in orange. We had A LOT to talk about because she loves bloggers, “ahem, thank you very much.”

Joobeelicious5

The fashion show began around 7:30 ish: designer Jenny Hwa for Loyale and designer Brookelynn Starnes for Cloak & Dagger

Did you attend? What did or do you think? …

New York Fashion Week: Czech Benefashion Show

August 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Homeage to Glass collection

Fashion Week is mere days away and I’ll be covering some shows! One of the shows will a NEW COLLECTIONS PRESENTED AT THE BENEFASHION SHOW 09. I’ve decided to attend their event because this event supports disadvantaged young adults. Although fashion week has its glitz, glamour, parties, fabulous people, let’s be real here … at the end of the day it’s important to encourage helping others in the process right? Right!

A fashion show will be held that will do more than showcase the latest trends and newest fashions. The Czech Center New York in cooperation with Beauty of Help – Tatana Kucharova Foundation is presenting the second Czech Benefashion show in NYC on Saturday, September 12 at the Czech Center New York starting at 8:00 pm.Interested?? Tickets for the evening range from $75 – $300. For more information or to register contact the Czech Center New York at 1-646-422-3399 or info@czechcenter.com.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Beauty of Help – Tatana Kucharova Foundation. The foundation, whose patroness is Tatana Kucharova who was crowned the title of Miss World 2006, supports projects which effectively help and solve the specific problems of disadvantaged individuals or groups. Benefashion 09 will support their Halfway Houses fund, which supports young people who are living in shelter houses because they were forced to leave children’s homes or foster care after reaching adulthood.

  • The show will present a unique collection by world-renowned Czech designer Libena Rochova. The collection “HOMAGE TO GLASS” is a blending of clothes and glass jewelry.

“To create glass jewellery was another challenge for me and also a dream come true. I already have experience with glass costume jewellery, but I was attracted by something different, by the creation of larger jewellery objects. It’s so exciting to see my visions are becoming a reality. The collection will be an interlink of clothes and jewellery,” says Libena Rochova.

  • Students of the Fashion and Footwear Design Studio of the Academy of Arts Architecture and Design Prague will present “THE REFLECTION OF TRADITION/FUSION OF PAST AND FUTURE.” Both of these collections were created especially for the New York City showcase.

I’ll have my full report after the event, and don’t be surprised to find an interview with Libena Rochova or Tatana Kucharova from the foundation! If you have any questions for them lemme know?! here or here

Fashion’s Night Out Top Events

August 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment

If you don’t know about this event, read here to get updated about this event that’s been creating a lot of buzz online as well as offline. To summarize, Fashion’s Night Out is a huge event with participants ranging from boutiques, departments stores, to independent designers who will contribute a percentage of the proceeds to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center. A day to celebrate shopping,

Anyhoos, here a list of events to think about, on top of freebie events that I posted earlier. See! There’s too many … which ones will you be attending!?!

Top Ten Events During Fashion’s Night Out On September 10: from Racked:

10. Rag & Bone
Guys, this is for you: Rag & Bone will turn their Christopher Street store into an Irish Pub, complete with free beer, a sawdust floor, and a live Irish band. We might just end up calling it a night here. 100 Christopher Street.

9. Adam Lippes
Not content to party until 11pm, Adam’s Meatpacking store will stay open until 1am with free cocktails. He’ll also have special edition personalized T-shirts for sale, and in case you’ve missed them thus far—the Havaianas customizing crew! All proceeds from the sale of the Havaianas will go to the 9/11 fund. 678 Hudson Street.

8. H&M
Even though all area H&Ms will stay open late, it’s the Herald Square store that’ll celebrate the most. Surrender yourself to their stylist and then pose for their “celebrity photographer.” Your photo will then be projected onto their big billboard overlooking the Meatpacking District. 1328 Broadway.

7. Kirna Zabete
It’s Kirna’s 10th anniversary, so they’ll be celebrating double-time by bringing in Narciso Rodriguez, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler, Thakoon Panichgul, Jason Wu, and Peter Som to debut their exclusive items for Kirna. Want to snap up a Wu sketch or a Proenza Schouler tote bag? This is the place to do it. 96 Greene Street.

6. Juicy Couture
With Anna at Macy’s, it’s only proper that Hamish Bowles be at Juicy, right? He’ll be at their Fifth Avenue flagship to read from the works of Noel Coward as shoppers lounge in a “gentleman’s club, reminiscent of founder Gela Nash-Taylor’s eccentric English manor (featured in Vogue’s September issue).” 650 Fifth Avenue.

5. Chanel
Actually hosting two large events at different stores, Chanel will cater to both the rich and the poor. At 139 Spring Street, they’ll debut the jade nail polish with free mini-manicures and a DJ set by Alexa Chung. Meanwhile at 15 East 57th Street, for the first time ever, Chanel will have a create-your-own-handbag studio. “Choose your favorite lambskin color, lining, hardware, and chain—and be among the first in the United States to own a customized, monogrammed Chanel classic bag.” Oh yes, and there will be champagne of course.

4. Bergdorf Goodman
If this doesn’t get you to BG, then nothing will: Andre Leon Talley hosting a fashion game show with “teams led by Donna Karan, Linda Fargo, and Robert Verdi.” Also, Annie Leibovitz will be around, Padma Lakshmi will host a cook-off with Cynthia Rowley and Peter Som, Zac Posen will be selling his paintings, Alexander Wang will drop in and Isaac Mizrahi will hold a talk. This is some crazy shiz right here; make sure to jot down the exact times for the event you most want to see. 754 Fifth Avenue.

3. Alice + Olivia
Right alongside the Fashion Week tents in Bryant Park, the Alice + Olivia boutique will become a photo studio, with auditions to be a model in the Alice + Olivia presentation the following week. Hopefuls won’t be left to their own devices either; they’ll get pro hairstyling, makeup and wardrobe styling before stepping in front of the camera. Here’s something for the resume. 80 West 40th Street

2. Opening Ceremony
In the spirit of Chinatown, OC will take their celebration to the streets, with special-edition items sold out of the backs of vintage automobiles (example: a Thai truck sporting Band of Outsiders gear). In addition, you’ll able to meet and greet with the designers behindRodarteBand of OutsidersProenza SchoulderFendi, and of course Alexander Wang. Munch on food from neighborhood restaurants and enjoy DJ sets by “friends” of Opening Ceremony. 35 Howard Street.

1. Barneys
As expected, Barneys will be killing it during Fashion’s Night Out, hosting such famous faces as the Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen bartending, Isabel Toledo, Alexander Wang for runway lessons, Juan Carlos Obando teaching salsa and more. Oh yea, and they’ll be teaching knitting and hosting a fashion green market curated by Vogue editor Tonne Goodman. There’s too much to list here; click above for all the details. 660 Madison Avenue.

This is like a Fashion Carnival, festival, party … AHHH

Keep September 10th OPEN on the blackberry, iphone, moleskines, etc whatever you use!!
